The Simplest of Questions - First Time User

Hi and thanks for your advice to a newbie and complete novice. I am trying to simply put two text characters on a golf ball. When I hit Apply, I get the following: "Warning: in layer "Layer 1" unable to draw text; please convert it to a path first. Consider using the Hershey Text extension which is located under the "Render" category of extensions." I tried changing it to a Hershey text extension, save it, and try again. The eggbot pro moves the pen to a 1:30 position and, pretends it is writing (but above the golf ball surface), and then goes back to the start position and repeats the above error message. Any advice is much appreciated....
